Beshalach בשלח "When he sent "

Summary

Picture
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near. For God said, “Lest the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.”           -Exodus 13:17

Pharaoh has finally let Israel go and instead of heading north through Philistine territory to get to the Promised Land God directs them to the Red Sea (Yam Suph). Pharaoh feeling that this has been a tactical blunder on the part of Israel pursues them in order to recapture his slave labor force.

When Pharaoh arrives he pins Israel against the sea, but God has other plans. God blocks the path of Pharaoh and his army while He provides a way of escape through the sea. When the path is clear and Israel is well under way God removes the pillar of smoke blocking Pharaoh's advance allowing the Egyptians to again continue the pursuit. As Israel completes their crossing on dry ground the Egyptians have entered the Red Sea behind them. The seabed turns to mud as Moses raises his staff to command the sea to close. Pharaoh and his entire army is drowned in the sea. When Israel witnesses this event they know that they are truly free, Pharaoh and his army will never be able to bring them back into slavery. They break forth into what is known as the Song of the Sea.

Israel enters the Wilderness of Sin and some of them begin to grumble and complain because of lack of water. God provides water at the waters of Mara. After this others complain that there is no meat so God provides quail for them to eat. God begins to provide manna for Israel in the Wilderness.
